So, recently I’ve been getting off on spontaneously creating mini-playlists. Themed ones. (Essentially like what I did that one time.) I love distance running, so naturally that came up as a theme in my mind today.
I’m also feeling inspired by Julia Chase-Brand (pictured above in 1961), the first woman to compete in a major running event, even though race officials denied her entrance on multiple occasions. Pretty much as radical feminist and politically rebellious as the running world gets. Anyway, enough prattle, give me the running songs:
This by-no-means-in-my-top-20-but-still-good Talking Heads song also reminds me of running. But mainly, you ought to look up and listen to songs 1, 4, 7 and 8 from the mini-playlist. Oh, and if you’re going to run, obviously you should be wearing Joy Division-themed New Balances. Just saying.
I’ve found that running in San Francisco with a set of earbuds in my ears is a helluva safety issue….I dig your playlist, though. When I run at Lake Merced I go for more art-thumper stuff, post punk from the early 80s and New York Danceteria/no wave-inspired stuff. All of a sudden I’m tearing along at an 8-minute mile clip. Unfortunately most runs are through city streets and I’m too chicken to drown out car-speeding-around-a-corner noise while running….
OMG, yes. I’ve def almost gotten hit by MUNI while running at night. It sucks. Also, these are good running-themed songs, but honestly I usually listen to (kind bad) ’90s pop-punk when I’m running… I don’t know why Propagandhi and NOFX just fit that situation for me, haha.
