Pussy Riot is a feminist Russian punk band (responsible for the excellent song “Putin Pissed Himself”), who I’ve played on my radio show in the past. Due to some outrageous circumstances, three members of the all-female collective are currently being detained in jail and charged with (wait for it) “hooliganism.”
They didn’t actually break any laws, but their ideas and music are dangerous to the current religious and political powers that be in Russia. Basically, these women are being incarcerated on the basis of ultra-nationalism, censorship, and sexism, and they could face up to seven years in prison.
Last week, Amnesty International released a statement demanding the release of the members of Pussy Riot, and Kathleen Hanna recently launched a video in support of the women.
April 15th and April 21st are both “action days” to show your solidarity with Maria, Nadezhda, Ekaterina, and Pussy Riot in general. Learn more about how you can help HERE.
I can’t tell you how much I’m glad you posted this… Seriously Erin, you rock socks.
